What’s on TV
CITY ON A HILL 9 p.m. on Showtime. A slew of heavyweight actors and the robust backdrop of Boston have shaped an ambitious first season for “City on a Hill,” which is airing its finale tonight. The drama follows Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge), an assistant district attorney, and Jackie Rohr (Kevin Bacon), a veteran F.B.I. agent, as they each find their own way to navigate the city’s criminal justice system, which is rife with corruption. Mike Hale writes in a review for The New York Times that the show “keeps threatening to be interesting and exciting, but so far it hasn’t pulled off the job.”
THE ROOK 8 p.m. on Starz. The first season of this fantasy spy thriller starring Emma Greenwell is coming to an end. Greenwell plays Myfanwy Thomas, a woman with supernatural powers who is trying to regain her memory. She shares the screen with the sci-fi favorite Olivia Munn as Monica Reed, an agent from the American sister agency to the Checquy, the British secret service that protects the country from sinister magic. In the finale, Myfawny is still searching for clues to her past, even as her powerful enemies at the Checquy get closer to capturing her.
SWEETBITTER 9:30 p.m. on Starz. As the final two episodes of Season 2 premiere, Tess (Ella Purnell) is still feeling lost, unsure of her future at the trendy New York restaurant where she works and indecisive about her love life. She is determined to keep the chaos of working in food at bay — but that may require some serious sacrifice.
MINDHUNTER Stream on Netflix. Another season of this hit show, which takes a deep-dive into the minds of some of the world’s most notorious serial killers, has returned to Netflix. One of the newest subjects this season for Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), both F.B.I. agents, and Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), a psychologist, is none other than Charles Manson, played by Damon Herriman. In a review for The Times, James Poniewozik reassures viewers who may want to avoid the typical gore associated with killer-focused shows that “‘Mindhunter’ thus far is more interested in the process of getting inside skulls than the process of removing them.”
FIND ME IN PARIS Stream on Hulu. The first season of this charming show saw Helena Grinsky (Jessica Lord), a Russian princess and ballet dancer at Opéra de Paris, transported from the year 1905 to 2018 thanks to Henri (Christy O’Donnell), her time-traveling boyfriend. While he attempts to get her back to 1905, Helena tries to adapt to the contemporary age, and she also may have found a modern love in Max (Rory J. Saper), a dance student. This season, Helena has to decide if she really wants to return to the past at all.
