Sketches of New York Restaurants

John Donohue, a former editor at The New Yorker, has a talent for the visual image, not just the written word. He has been sketching New York restaurants for several years, and selling the drawings. Now he has assembled more than 100 of them in a book covering all five boroughs, with places like Cafe Luxembourg, Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant, Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse, Union Square Cafe, Dominick’s Restaurant, Lilia and Roberta’s. Each sketch has a splash of color and a one-sentence description, with an occasional longer write-up. “A few places may have closed,” he said; the book is a record of the Red Cat, Café Loup and a few others.
