Netflix recently dropped Sacred Games season two with the series continuing with Sartaj Singh (played by Saif Ali Khan) battling against the clock to stop catastrophe striking the heart of Mumbai. The new series was a seamless follow-up to the first run, picking up where the last episode left off and running with it. Just like season one, Sacred Games didn’t hold back in its depiction of the mafia and its use of violence to control and intimidate with a high body count. Express.co.uk looks at the biggest deaths on the crime drama to date.
The 5 most shocking deaths in Sacred Games
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Sacred Games seasons 1 & 2
1. Ganesh Gaitonde
Episode one of Sacred Games packed quite a punch as detective Sartaj rushed to find mafia kingpin Ganesh Gaintonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who warned of a terrible attack that would wipe out Mumbai.
Although Sartaj managed to locate the godfather of Gopalmath, Gaitonde ended his own life.
And yet, he seemed to remain in Sartaj’s head as he narrated the story and hinted he was the immortal “ashwathama” and could never die.
In a sense, Gaitonde was right as the show continued to tell his life story right from the beginning and leading up to his untimely demise.
The death was shocking simply because he was a major character and for a moment it looked like Gaitonde could work with Sartaj to avert crisis.
Gaitonde’s right-hand man met quite an unpleasant end which was depicted in the first season after he was killed by Malcolm Mourad (Luke Kenny).
He was murdered as Sartaj could get to him in a horrific hail of bullets.
As his electric wheelchair veered out of control, carrying Bunty’s lifeless body, it ended up going into a road where it was accidentally hit by a truck – the last moment coming completely unexpectedly and sealing the lieutenant’s death.
Despite meeting his maker in the first run, Bunty made a comeback in the second series and was revealed to have become a famous poet.
Kukoo (Kubbra Sait) had a tragic story arc after she took her own life – despite finding love with Gaitonde.
Gaitonde was utterly heartbroken after happening across her body and shaking her in the hopes she would still be alive.
Her death came as Gaitonde found himself under attack from rivals and fought off gangsters before going in search for his girlfriend.
Although Kukoo did return, she was only a vision Gaitonde saw under the influence of red Gochi tea.
4. Guru Ji
New character Guru Ji (Pankaj Tripathi) really came into his own in season two and served as a chief antagonist.
We saw how he fitted into the story and his role in the nuclear attack on Mumbai as well as the connection to Gaitonde.
He was again unexpectedly killed by Gaitonde who attacked him and suffocated the holy man while having hallucinations caused by Gochi.
Guru Ji’s followers were shocked and stunned but continued with his plans, while Gaitonde was forgiven for the killing.
5. Anjali Mathur
RAW agent Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) was murdered by Malcolm when she stumbled across evidence of the impending attack.
As she desperately tried to call Sartaj, Anjali was shot in the head by Malcolm when he found her looking over maps pertaining to the plan to end Mumbai.
Her death came completely out of the blue as it appeared she was a major character working with Sartaj and therefore safe.
Sadly, Anjali didn’t make an appearance in the new series because of the linear nature of Sartaj’s storyline rather than Gaitonde’s which jumped around.
