WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale season three episode five, ‘The Great Escape’.
Unlucky Archie Andrew (played KJ Apa) still hasn’t mastered the art of figuring people out, as he allowed himself to be played for a fool in the latest instalment of Riverdale.
The redhead, who is locked up in juvie for the murder of Cassidy Book, a crime he did not commit, fell for yet another trick when he attempted to escape prison.
The drama unfolded when the teen tried to break out of the detention centre with a few of his fellow inmates in the early stages of episode five, titled The Great Escape.
However, the prison guards stopped them with rubber bullets as they ran towards the fence.
After, Warden Norton summoned Archie for a “final meal” and told him all his special benefits would be taken away.
Realising he was in deep trouble, Archie begged the warden to at least tell him how Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) framed his for the murder of Cassidy.
Agreeing to spill all, the warden told the youngster Hiram paid $10,000 to every one of the “witnesses”, in return for them lying about seeing Archie commit the crime.
The warden also told Archie he would be taking part in one final match at his underground fight club, The Pit.
Later, his girlfriend Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) arrived at the fight club event dressed in a disguise and got to spend some time alone with him.
Archie then revealed his new escape plan, which involved climbing through the drain in the empty pool where the fights take place.
But he needed his friends to pull off the elaborate plan, so Veronica roped in the likes of Betty (Lili Reinhart), Josie (Ashleigh Murray) and Kevin (Casey Cott)) to help.
As their plan to break the convict out of juvie got underway, Archie bumped into his Serpent friend Joaquin (Rob Raco).
Joaquin was behaving very strange in Archie’s company and kissed him, before suddenly stabbing him, saying the warden had put him up to it and promised he would reach ascension level in Griffins and Gargoyles.
Fans were puzzled by the scene and flocked to Twitter to discuss Joaquin’s betrayal and the warden’s involvement in the game.
One viewer raged: “I can’t believe he stabbed Archie,” while another said “Oh Lord! What did Joaquin get himself into after stabbing Archie like that?”
A third asked: “Joaquin why the hell are you out her stabbing Archie?” while a fourth tweeted: “Yo what the hell is this warden’s obsession with Archie.”(sic)
Someone else exclaimed: “Tell me I didn’t see it! Tell me I didn’t see it! Joaquin kissed Archie and then stabbed him! Totally messed up!”
Another asked: “Did anyone else scream when Joaquin stabbed Archie?”
Riverdale continues next Wednesday on The CW in the US and today on Netflix in the UK.
