The actor played Chewbacca in the famous movie franchise. Peter died at the age of 74. The cause of his death is as of yet unknown.
Peter passed away in north Texas home with his family around him.
The legendary actor passed away on April 30 his family confirmed in a statement.
The Star Wars legend played Chewbacca in all three original Star Wars films.
He also featured in episode III, Return of the Sith and in the new trilogy of films.
Peter’s family confirmed that he had “fought his way back from being wheelchair bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more” for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The statement from his family also said: “He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock-kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth.
“But to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film.
“The relationships that began then grew into the friends and family that he would love for decades to come.
“As the films released and became more well-known, he had his eyes opened to the possibilities of what he could achieve with his role in the Star Wars universe.”
Peter left behind a wife and three children who will take over his foundation.
The Peter Mayhew Foundation supported was set up in order to help the “alleviation of disease, pain, suffering and the financial toll brought on by life’s traumatic events” the foundation’s website states.
A memorial service will be held on June 29.
A public memorial will be held in early December in Los Angeles.
After starring in the franchise, Peter became a US citizen in 2005.
Peter suffered from gigantism and had double knee-replacement surgery in 2013.
He unfortunately spent his later years in a wheelchair.
