Orange Is the New Black came to an end in the summer of 2019, after seven years and seven seasons. In the penultimate episode, fan-favourite Pennsatucky met a heartbreaking end, something which fans and actress Taryn Manning could not believe. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about what happened to Doggett.
American actress Taryn Manning plays Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett in Orange Is the New Black.
Manning had been a part of the show’s cast since the first season in 2013.
By season seven of OITNB, Doggett had come a long way from her serious methamphetamine addition and her violent behaviour.
Her drug addiction had been so bad that in season two, she had to get a new set of teeth.
In the final season, Dogged had started taking classes to receive her high school diploma, where she learnt she suffered from dyslexia.
She even recruited Taystee (played by Danielle Brooks) to help tutor her.
However, things took a dark turn for her character when C.O Luschek (Matt Peters) started teaching the class, as he failed to fill out the form that would secure her extra time in the exam.
She was left devastated and enraged by what had happened to everything she had worked so hard for.
Walking away from everything she had achieved, Doggett decided to join Daya (Dascha Polanco) and her gang in the laundry room and take drugs.
In a shock twist, Doggett died from a drug overdose and it was left unclear whether it was an accident.
The last OITNB fans see of Doggett is a translucent version of her, perhaps symbolising her spirit, waving goodbye to the prison and putting her hood up before turning her back and disappearing.
Doggett’s ending was bittersweet as it was later revealed she had passed her GED test after all.
Even Manning who played Dogged for seven years revealed she was surprised by her characters fate.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Manning said: “They said that it [the drugs] was just going to be too heavy for her body.”
She added: “And I’m like, ‘Well, of course, this is how she’s going to die because they want to illuminate how bad this is.’ They truly are geniuses with some of the things that they could forecast.
“So, that happened. And I’m like, ‘Really, she’s going to go out like that?’ It made me kind of bummed to be honest because Pennsatucky is so much smarter now.
“But I’m a team player. I understood because it was really going to evoke emotion.”
“When we got to film it. I did the scene and it was emotional, but I think people already had come to terms. Because there’s so much that happens in this season that’s just a bum-rush of emotion.”
Month’s later, Manning accepted her character’s fate. She said: “It’s meant to leave you with such a feeling. It was very sad. I still get sad. We all die.
“Nobody’s getting out of here alive. And for people to just grasp this notion, I think the world would be a better place.”
