Knicks, Without Dennis Smith Jr., Are Routed by Spurs

LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the host San Antonio Spurs beat the Knicks, 109-83, on Friday night to extend their season-best winning streak to seven games.

DeMar DeRozan and Bryn Forbes each had 13 points for San Antonio, whose previous season high was five straight victories.

The Knicks, who were without point guard Dennis Smith Jr., lost their eighth in a row. They will host the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday afternoon.

Smith missed the game with a sore lower back. Coach David Fizdale said before the game that the team was unsure how the injury occurred, and that Smith was day to day.

“His back just kind of went out on him,” Fizdale said. “He had a couple of collisions there during the last game,” on Tuesday against Indiana.

In addition, Noah Vonleh did not return for the Knicks after injuring his right ankle in the first half.

Damyean Dotson had 21 points to lead the Knicks, and DeAndre Jordan added 11 points and 13 rebounds and matched a career high with nine assists.

Emmanuel Mudiay had 5 points as part of a 9-2 run beginning midway through the third quarter to pull the Knicks to 9 points behind, 76-67. They had an opportunity to pull closer, but Kadeem Allen missed a contested layup as Aldridge raced back on defense after a turnover. Rudy Gay followed with a 3-pointer to extend the Spurs’ lead to 79-67.

Gay, Jakob Poeltl and Marco Belinelli added 12 points each for San Antonio. Poeltl also had nine rebounds and matched a career high with five blocks.

Mitchell Robinson blocked two shots, extending his streak of consecutive games with a block to 26. Among Knicks rookies, only Patrick Ewing’s 28 straight games with a block is longer in franchise history.

PISTONS 111, LAKERS 97 Los Angeles fell further out of the Western Conference playoff race, and LeBron James, whose minutes are being managed, sat out the game in Detroit after scoring 29 points in 31 minutes on Thursday at Toronto.

James had not missed an entire game since Feb. 2. He did not suit up, but there was certainly a buzz among the fans behind one of the baskets when he emerged around the midway point of the first quarter and walked over to the bench to join his team. He went back toward the locker room at the start of the fourth.

The Pistons, who got 19 points and 23 rebounds from Andre Drummond, moved into a virtual tie with the Nets for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

76ERS 123, KINGS 114 Joel Embiid had 21 points and 17 rebounds as host Philadelphia defeated Sacramento to tie Indiana for third place in the East. Jimmy Butler added 22 points.
