Yesterday night’s episode of Emmerdale saw Dan Spencer (played by Liam Fox) bring back Rachel’s (Gemma Oaten) son Archie (Kai Assi) to the village to live with his dad, Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson). He then revealed she’s dead but fans are convinced she’s still alive and bosses have a big storyline in place.
Fans saw emotional scenes where Dan cuddled Archie and reflected on how his mum, Rachel, was just starting to sort herself out.
Estranged father Jai started to think about the son he had never known, opening up about the drug addict to Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy).
Despite Jai’s emotional reaction, fans were not convinced Rachel was dead considering previous stunts she pulled.
Fans will remember she conned Jai with another baby by convincing him it was Archie in order to keep his real son away from him.
Fans started to speculate when a stunned Jai wanted answers about Rachel’s death before being reunited with his son.
“How? Was it an accident? Is Archie alright?” Jai asked Dan, who delivered the shocking news.
While many viewers were stunned by the sudden death of her character, others were confused by Dan’s reaction to the news.
The lack of emotional display could perhaps be the reason why fans were not convinced and a little confused over the decision to kill the character off.
Taking to Twitter, one fan theorised: “What you doing here Archie! oh I just caught a ferry and thought I’d pop in and say hi.”
Another tweeted: “I really don’t get why Emmerdale killed off Rachel. First I don’t like it when regular characters are killed off screen.
“Second she was a decent enough character. Surely they could have come up with a better way to get Jai to have Archie without killing her off?”
Rachel’s sister Ali (Kelli Hollis) was also killed off in a car accident, with Dan having to break the news to their daughter Amelia.
In 2015, Ali’s partner Ruby Haswell (Alicia Eyo) was killed on-screen in a horrific helicopter crash.
Dan was quick to point out the tragedies his family have gone through over the years, asking Jai: “What next?”
Reflecting on the twist, one viewer shared: “Dan is right, that family is cursed. Ruby, Ali, Rachel…who next? Sean?”
The surprising storyline clearly had viewers reeling but could it mean Rachel will return in future to surprise Jai?
Actress Gemma opened up about her character’s death on Twitter, telling her 17,300 followers, the soap star said: “And so Rachel has joined her soap family in the sky.
“What a journey it’s been. I got the role of Rachel Breckle in @emmerdale within a year of graduating from Drama school and it changed my life.”
Fans offered their support while some where upset over the news of her character.
Emmerdale returns tonight on 7pm on ITV.
